What I Always Share With Clients Starting a New Website

Practical tips to get started with confidence

When clients come to me for a new website, their heads are often full of ideas — and sometimes stress. Because…
“What do I need to deliver?”
“Are my photos good enough?”
“What should go on the homepage?”
“What kind of tone should I use?”

The good news: you don’t need to have it all figured out yet.
But it definitely helps to have a few things ready.
Of course I’ll guide you — but here are some of the key tips I share with almost every client.

1 Make sure you have good, personal photos

People connect with people.
A few warm, professional photos of yourself instantly make your website feel more personal. Think of:

  • A portrait in your work setting
  • A photo of you smiling or in conversation
  • A mood image of your workspace or creative process

No professional photos yet? You can start with good, personal snapshots — better something authentic than impersonal stock images.
We’ll look at what fits your style, and later on you can always have professional photos taken.

2 Think about your tone of voice

Are you serious or playful? Direct or friendly?
What fits you — and your clients?

You don’t have to be a copywriter, but it helps to think about how you sound. Use words you naturally use. Write like you speak.
I’ll help with that too: I’ll check for tone, clarity and style.

3 Gather some inspiration

What style appeals to you? What colours resonate with you?
Which websites do you like (and why)?

You don’t need to know exactly. But a Pinterest board, Canva moodboard or a folder with examples helps us both get a sense of direction.
I can even give you a template to get started.

4 Start small with your content

Start with some key words: who you are, what you do, who you work with, what you offer. Don’t worry about ‘beautiful writing’ — I’ll help with that.
We’ll puzzle things out until it feels right.

5We build together – step by step

You don’t need to have everything finished before we begin.
In fact, most things evolve along the way. Your content, your visuals, your tone — they all grow as we go.
I’ll guide you through the process and tell you exactly what I need from you at each stage.

And most importantly:

Your website doesn’t need to be perfect from day one.
It needs to begin. Be clear. Tell your story.
The rest will follow.
