A piece of the sea to take home

Life & Reflection | 25 August 2025

The sea shows a different face every day. Especially here on the coast of Pineda, where the beach stretches from Calella to Malgrat de Mar. It’s not the white powder-sand beach you see on postcards, but a mix of sand and small pebbles. Depending on the season, the wind and the tide, it can feel smooth or rather rough underfoot.

If you’re sporty and walk along the water’s edge, you really feel it in your legs – the slope makes it heavy, but also wonderful to do.

Luckily there’s also a nice path along the beach, where you can walk more comfortably. In the mornings it’s at its best: the sea lies like a mirror, with a gentle swell and hardly any wind. By midday a breeze usually picks up, and in winter there are days with real waves. That can be quite something – sometimes so strong that when you get out, you feel like a whale being thrown onto land. Not elegant, but a memory to laugh about later.

What I find special about this beach is that you rarely find shells. Occasionally you see people, often women, scanning the shore, searching for that one beautiful find. I don’t really look on purpose, but sometimes… there’s a piece of sea glass. Smooth, translucent, rounded by time and the sea. White, green or blue pieces – I call them my little pearls. Not every day, not often. But when I see one, I take it with me. A tangible piece of the sea.

When I find a piece of sea glass, it feels as if the sea has left something behind just for me.

At home I already have a small collection. On Pinterest I often see creative ideas: making cards with sea glass, or combining them with an illustration or line drawing. For now I just keep them, in a jar on my shelf. As small reminders of my morning walks. Of watching instead of rushing. And of the beach that gives me something new every day.
